This picture is of the United States soldiers changing a flag because one of the commanding officers ordered them to because a politician that was visiting wanted to hang it in his office. It became known to many as a symbol of victory and hope, and the soldiers pictured were known to all as heroes. Later on in the war, some of these brave soldiers were lost due to guerrilla warfare. The survivors returned to America and were treated like the bravest soldiers in all of the Vietnam War.
